NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health

The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety provides a broad understanding of the general health and safety issues that affect all types of organisation and enables risks to be managed effectively.  As well as covering a range of workplace hazards and methods of control, it includes the legal system in the UK and legislation relating to the management of health and safety at work.

No previous health and safety knowledge is required and it is an excellent course for:

  • Managers, supervisors and worker representatives.
  • Those wishing to start a career in health and safety.

Many larger organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as an important part of their management development programme. Smaller organisations, operating in lower risk environments, often choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as the appropriate qualification for the appointed person taking the lead on health and safety issues in their organisation.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate provides a valuable overview and is a sound basis for further professional study, such as the NEBOSH National Diploma, Construction Certificate and Fire Certificate.  It also meets the academic requirements for Technician Membership (Tech IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH – www.iosh.co.uk) and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Managements (IIRSM – www.iirsm.org).

As the NEBOSH National General Certificate includes UK legislation it is most suitable for those who intend to work in the UK, the NEBOSH International General Certificate is designed for those who intend to work outside the UK.

ASSESSMENT

The qualification is divided into three assessed units, each of which is assessed separately.  Assessment is by two written examinations (one for each of the Units NGC1 and NGC2) and a work-based practical examination (Unit NGC3).  All units must be completed within 5 years to achieve the full NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

NGC1 and NGC2 examinations take place in January, April, July, and October. Study programmes are designed to lead towards these dates. Examinations for in-house courses can be arranged with NEBOSH on demand, for a date to suit the learning programme.

Students are awarded a unit certificate for each unit of assessment successfully achieved and an overall certificate parchment is given to students that pass all examinations.  Students who are unsuccessful in one of the units may re-sit that unit.
